December 19th:

Paul Brandt fans ‘Turn on the Tap’ to safe water for 22,000 in the developing world

Donations during Canadian country singer’s national tour go toward BioSand Water Filters

Calgary, AB (December 18, 2007) – In response to an invitation from Paul Brandt, the award-winning country singer’s fans have donated enough money to provide safe drinking water to 20,000 people in the developing world. Brandt’s fans have supported Samaritan’s Purse Canada’s “Turn on the Tap” initiative that is raising $6.5 million over three years to build and install BioSand Water Filters.

Through Brandt’s web site, and at each concert venue in 19 cities during his month-long national tour, he invited fans to make donations to Turn on the Tap (www.turnonthetap.ca <http://www.turnonthetap.ca/> ). He also invited donors to meet him backstage after the concert so he could personally thank them for their help in providing life-saving and low-cost drinking water to the needy in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

More than 1,000 fans responded. Their $220,000 of combined donations during the Nov. 4-to-Dec. 2 tour will enable Samaritan’s Purse to build and install 2,200 of the Canadian-designed filters. Each filter serves about 10 people – meaning the 2,200 filters will benefit approximately 22,000 people.

“It’s been a pleasure to see my fans respond to this need,” Brandt says. “More than one billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. The diseases caused by drinking polluted water are killing someone every 20 seconds. BioSand Water Filters from Samaritan’s Purse can transform polluted water into drinkable water in seconds. I’ve seen them working in Cambodia.”

The $100 cost of each BioSand Water Filter from Samaritan’s Purse includes hygiene and sanitation training and equipment. Filter recipients help in the construction and installation. By helping improve their overall health, the filters enable entire families to enhance their performance at school and at work to escape the vicious cycle of poverty that hampers their communities’ and their nations’ economic and social development.

“Samaritan’s Purse Canada wishes to thank Paul for his extraordinary service and generosity to our organization and the people we serve around the world,” said Fred Weiss, Executive Director. “Paul has played a major role for several years now in promoting our annual Operation Christmas Child program, and we are very grateful to also have his help in telling Canadians about Turn on the Tap.”
